When the Super Bowl ended, I clicked over to ESPNews to listen to the press conferences. I was able to stay awake a little while longer and listen to Coach Dungy answer questions. I found myself intently listening, and question after question realized that Tony Dungy is 100% class. He has developed a team, and a program, that (in Tony's words) "can win with not only good players, but good people. I am proud as a Christian coach that I can coach and honor the lord, and still win. And I hope that gets across to owners, athletic directors, and all kinds of people across football".
There was an excellent quote as well, when a reporter asked him, "how does this compare to winning a super bowl as a player?"
And, again, Coach Dungy answered eloquently. "As a player its fun and exciting, but as a coach is so much more satisfying/rewarding [not sure which it was] because you can see how all the people around you, from the scouts to my assistant coaches, to the players have come together to make this happen." He continued to credit the type of people he has around him. For me, I always try to make sure I recognize the work others do, and find ways to build people. Tony Dungy just took the bar and raised it about 500 rungs.
Congrats Tony. But more importantly, thank you for the example you set as an African American, Christian professional football coach. Its admirable and deserves more than just a super bowl trophy.
