This week is for John, who continually praises 9, the newest of Damien Rice. Rice, born in Ireland, first got involved in music with Jupiter, an Irish indie band, before taking some time away to tour Europe and launch a solo career. Rice made a name for himself in the US with O in 2004. Rice is usually placed in the folk-pop genre, but his music is distinguishable by the sting accompaniments and duets with Lisa Hannigan.
As I first browsed through 9, shocked overtook me - this was not the same Damien Rice that is on my "Sleep" and "Chill Music" playlists. I admit that it took me awhile to accept Rice's new direction with his music. I wanted to hear songs like "Older Chest" or "Amie," my favorite single for obvious reason. Instead, I was hearing "F*ck you" from Rice in the chorus of "Rootless Tree."
This album proves that Rice is a true artist, willing to create emotionally intense lyrics, revolving around infidelity and jealousy, into amazing music. Song after song, violent and intense lyrics come out of the same beautiful voice that is known and loved. 9 forces listeners to really listen, give it a chance, and, of course, some time. Rice may have branched out, but I have faith that his fan base will stick by him and hopefuly even grow. I know he has my support, and lets not forget, John's.
My New Favorites:
Coconut Skins
9 Crimes

A truly wonderful album. Infused emotion and great music together. While it may be a bit "sketchy" (as I was told by Sam and Emily,) I truly believe it is a very well made album. Depressing it may be at times, stick with the album, it's well worth it.
BTW Amy, he's not saying **** you, he's saying trust you ;]
My favorites :
Rootless Tree
Grey Room
Dogs
9 Crimes
Thank you for the review. I loved O. I did not know he had a new album but I will be sure to check it out.
