The Antlers

After almost a year of inactivity, I think I'll take the reigns and hopefully revive Taming Zeus.

Lately I have been enveloped in the album "Hospice" created by the Brooklyn band "The Antlers."

The Antlers - Hospice Pictures, Images and Photos

The Antler began as the solo project of Peter Silberman, releasing two solo albums "Uprooted" and "In the Attic of the Universe," before forming a trio with Michael Lerner and Darby Cicci. The newly formed band self released "Hospice" in 2009, before signing with French Kiss Records who later remastered the album.

"Hospice" is a concept album narrating the story of a man who is witnessing his lover dying of cancer in hospice. Both sad and beautiful, I highly recommend it.

You can stream Hospice in its entire length on myspace
My favorite tracks: Two, Wake.

Enjoy

Back, live from London.

That's right. That's right. Back in action live from Clapham Common in south London. Jamming to Spotify with a view to the city, we've been camped out in London since January 9th - through three flats, poor landlord service, stolen mountain bikes -we're still here. Enjoying a sunday afternoon with pizza from ECO and watching season 2 of The Wire (my new favorite TV show).

Instead of spending the rest of the email updating all with the latest 9 months, I thought it would be good to tell a quick little story.

A friend of mine, John budde was in london last week. Hadn't seen the guy in like 5-6 years. Incredible to connect with someone you haven't seen in that long. Funny thing is, he looked exactly the same. Exactly. Not one thing changed, nothin'.

Me, however, wow. The first thing that comes out of his mouth after I tapped him on the shoulder from behind in Trafalgar Square - "whoa, I would never have recognised you". Yes. Yes, he said it.

I am an honest person, but I am usually the one that judges. And finally, the medicine from the past. So, how much have I changed? I want to post the change across some photos below. It's incredibly frightening. I guess I caught the worst of all Weber+Elliott genes when it came to looks - thank God alicia married me on personality (or did she?).

Take a look and laugh to yourself - its a freebie on a Sunday...notice from lots of hair (and maybe muscles), to college fading hair, to now (with no hair except for poor shaving practices). Next week I will focus on something else. Btw, Amy where are the promised posts??

Enjoy.

Cincinnati - A New Fashion Hub?

Cincinnati isn't famous for its fashion but there has been an upsurge in "the creative class" moving into the city. The Art Institute has recently moved down to Over-the-Rhine on 12th Street and all the new development is making it affordable for the younger, upper middle class to live in the city without going broke and still be homeowners - not just renters. There's a lot of good and bad - but I'll focus on the good. ArtWorks, an organization that promotes art within Cincinnati, has a new exhibit up for the month of June: Pre-Shrunk. It's a graphic t-shirt show promoting the work of local artists. Here are just a few:

Uproot Clothing Co. - www.uprootclothing.com

Although started in Columbus in 2005, Uproot is a hiphop/skater influenced artist company that designs t-shirts for all.

Nati Envolvement Clothing Co. – www.natievolvement.com

Nati Envolvement was designed to be a platform for Cincinnatians through art – anyone can submit designs and anyone can buy the gear (t-shirts to hoodies to hats). Most of the designs involve ideas about the City and it also has a skater feel

Terrence Hammonds –

Born in Over-the-Rhine and a graduate of the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, he is very involved in ArtWorks. He works mainly with screenprinting and obviously has placed some of his designs on t-shirts.

Cincinnati might be finally up and coming!

Vusi Mahlasela

I'm just testing to see if anyone still checks the blog and to share the music of a great South African folk guitarist: Vusi Mahlasela. Mahlasela is a talented artist that has emerged with both strong political views and a a strong voice.
Mahlasela reached the US through the 2005 South African film Tsotsi. In 1991, Mahlasela recorded his debut album, When You Come Back, which launched his career as a South African icon.
